THE CIRCUS / LE CIRQUE (1928) POSTER, BELGIAN

Art by Alvan Cordell 'Hap' Hadley (1895-1976)

This 1928 comedy was written, directed and stars Charlie Chaplin, who was at the height of his fame. Alvan Cordell 'Hap' Hadley was a cartoonist, illustrator and caricaturist. Whilst serving in World War One, Hadley became the official artist for the Marines. After the war Hadley worked for an advertising agency, before setting up his own Manhattan studio, which specialised in film and theatre advertising. Over the course of thirty years Hadley designed posters for the major film studios. When Hadley's poster for Buster Keaton's The General in 1926, was first seen by the critics, they professed that the design was pioneering for film poster advertising, owing to its use of vivid colours and its comical design. Hadley is particularly known for his wonderful posters for Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton films. This exceptionally rare 1928 Belgium poster has only surfaced a few times.
