EMILIAN SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY | A COASTAL LANDSCAPE WITH THE CALLING OF SAINT PETER
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is discoloured and uneven. There are old, discoloured retouchings visible throughout the sky and clouds, most notably centre and upper right. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms this underneath the thick varnish, and reveals further retouchings: one to an old loss lower right, two in the fisherman lower centre, and one to a repaired damage in the mast to his right measuring approx. 1 x 2cm. It also reveals strengthening to the masts and rigging of the ship far left. There may be older retouchings but these are not discernible underneath the fluorescing varnish. In overall moderate condition
