TWO RARE OVAL PORCELAIN TAZZAS FROM THE NICHOLAS I COALPORT SERVICE, IMPERIAL PORCELAIN FACTORY, ST PETERSBURG, PERIOD OF NICHOLAS I (1844-1855)
one circular and one oval, the bowls with the badge of the Order of St Andrew on white ground, the cobalt blue border decorated with the badges of the Orders of St George, St Alexander Nevsky, St Vladimir, the White Eagle, St Stanislaus and St Anne within shaped gilt cartouches, with faint blue factory marks

The 'Coalport Service' was originally ordered as a dessert service by Queen Victoria of England in 1845 as a gift for Nicholas I. The design of the service copies the 1833 William IV Worcester service, but the English Insignia were replaced with Russian Orders. The service was widely admired when displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
A conforming dinner service was ordered from the Coalport Porcelain Factory in 1849 and additions to the service were also made directly by the Imperial Porcelain Factory.
