Property of a Private European Collector
lacquered metal, coquille d'œuf, brass
impressed JEAN DUNAND and numbered 5239
6 in. (15.2 cm) high
6½ in. (16.5 cm) maximum diameter
Overall in very good condition. A stunning example of Dunand’s use of eggshell on lacquer, a technique that he introduced and perfected in the early 1920s, this vase features complex swirling patterns that radiate against a rich ebony background. The lacquer presents with some minor and expected signs of gentle handling and age consistent with the natural evolution of the medium. The eggshell pieces retain their original brightness and complex structure and present with rich and textural tones that range from white and off-white to burnt sienna as pictured in the catalogue photography. The brass rim in very good and well-preserved condition, with evidence of very light occasional oxidation consistent with the natural evolution of the medium. This piece has been inspected under blacklight and shows no apparent evidence of prior restoration.
