Property from the Estate of a Private Collector, New York
enameled cameo glass
signed in gold Daum/Nancy with the Croix de Lorraine
12⅛ in. (30.9 cm) high
Overall in very good condition. An early piece by Daum that takes inspiration from medieval imagery, this vase presents with complex layers of glass and enamel that together produce a majestic effect and enhance the visual power of its main subject, an eagle adorning the body of the piece. The glass presents with some extremely light surface wear around the body of the vase as well as very minor surface irregularities throughout which are only visible upon close inspection. The enameled and gilt surfaces have been inspected under blacklight and appear to be in original condition. The rim and base of the piece present with scattered areas of very minor loss to the gilding, concentrated near the edges of the decorative motifs, consistent with gentle handling and not visually distracting. The enameled surfaces with light discoloration throughout and areas of occasional minor loss, consistent with age and gentle handling. An important and early urn with highly detailed decorations in well-preserved condition.
