This work is in very good condition. The sheet is affixed verso to the backing board in several places along the sheet edges. The sheet edges are deckled and the sheet undulates slightly, which is due to the artist's choice of materials. There are artist's pinholes at all four corners. Extremely close inspection reveals two minute tears in the deckle; one at the centre of the upper edge and one on the lower right edge. Further extremely close inspection reveals a few minute and unobtrusive foxmarks to the unpainted areas, as well as a small rub mark at the lower right edge.

“I always know the people in my pictures. Very often they take the form of monkeys and bears and all sorts of things. It’s easier if you make them into animals because you can do things to animals that you can’t do to people because it’s too shocking.”

Paula Rego, quoted in: Ben Eastham and Helen Graham, ‘Interview with Paula Rego’, in The White Review, January 2011, online
