Triptych No. 1 from 1984 is archetypal of the Abstract Expressionist style for which Norman Bluhm is famed, evincing the broad, gestural brushstrokes and multipanel format that have come to define his output of this period. The present example is one of a series of three-panel works on paper Bluhm executed as a study for his large-scale triptych, Dante's Promenade (1984), which was included in the artist's major 2020 retrospective at the Newark Museum of Art. Another study in the series resides in the collection of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.
