The Aaron Siskind photograph offered here comes from the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Since 1936, when the Museum received an early gift of 160 Frances Benjamin Johnston photographs, the VMFA has strategically built a collection that reflects the full history of the medium, with artists such as Sally Mann, Louis Draper, Gordon Parks, Emmet Gowin, and André Kertész well-represented. This dynamic collection grew significantly in January 2020 when it received an unprecedented gift of more than 8,000 Aaron Siskind photographs from the Aaron Siskind Foundation, New York. The photographs offered here represent duplicates within the VMFA collection and have been selected for deaccession to support the Siskind Prize, an annual fellowship grant for artists working in photography and photo-based art.
