the cover crisply carved with a landscape scene depicting Su Shi's first visit to the Red Cliff, illustrating his companions on a raft steering towards the vertical cliff detailed with gnarled pine trees issuing from rockwock, the sides carved with bats and floral roundels against a diaper ground, the box similarly decorated, the base lacquered black and incised and gilt with a six-character reign mark, the inside of the cover lacquered black and incised and gilt with a four-character inscription reading Chibi baohe ('Red cliff treasure box')

There are overall small chips and losses to the edges and rim of both the cover and box, in particular to the inner edge of the box, there are also small losses and fritts to the floral petals and tips of the leaves of a few medallions to the sides. Overall small cracks and overall light wear. The head of the punter has been restored, and the lacquer in a few areas has been refreshed, including where the box meets the cover, and the lower edge of the box. The cover slightly warped.
