FIRST EDITION, 3 volumes bound in 2, folio (445 x 295mm.), engraved portrait and titles, coloured by hand, 240 coloured engraved plates, contemporary calf, binding rebacked retaining some of the original spine, portrait abraded with loss, volume 2 covers extensively repaired

"A very rare and unusual book which has a plate of each bird, and underneath or on a succeeding page a plate of its anatomy" (Sitwell, p.123). Of these splendid plates, 100 represent birds in brightly colored plumage. Exotic and, sometime, mystical animals depicted include the rhinoceros, elephant, and armadillo. The plates of the third part do not show the anatomy of the represented animal.
