The first German edition of Ulysses appeared in four issues on laid paper and two on India paper. "The emphasis on the private nature of this publication and the strict limitation of copies was caused by some fear on the part of the Swiss publisher that Ulysses might be subject to censorship" (Slocum & Cahoon)
