Depicting Lautrec’s friend, the English painter William Tom Warrener (1861 - 1934), L'anglais au Moulin-Rouge is derived from a painting formerly in its subject’s collection. A regular at the Moulin Rouge, the English artist, with his cane, moustache and top hat, is shown as an ageing dandy chatting up two female companions, identified as Rayon d’Or and La Sauterelle. While their proper bonnets and clothing disguise their professional status at the dance hall, their suggestive attitudes and narrowed eyes reflect the risqué nature of their conversation with the Englishman.
