JANE AVRIL (D. 367; ADR. 354; W. P29)

Lithograph printed in colors, 1899, without the snake remarque, on linen-backed wove paper, printed by H. Stern, commissioned by Jane Avril, Paris, framed

sheet: 550 by 360 mm 21⅝ by 14¼ in

With fresh colors, the print is in generally good condition apart from some tears, the longest measuring 3 inches at upper right, and inconspicuous horizontal creases, including one extending through the red of her hat and two into the black area of her dress below. A few slight surface scuffs, one touched-in in the red hem of her dress and pale scattered fox marks.

In 1899, Lautrec’s second to last poster was commissioned by a favorite of his many muses, Jane Avril herself. It is a masterful use of color and a compelling depiction of the full female form, however it was never displayed. The subject is standing still yet appears to be recoiling dramatically, her body bending in sync with the snake twisting up her dress.
