The figure of Mary Magdalene in the present relief is ostentatiously dressed, depicted in this manner to highlight her worldliness and vanity. A common type on Antwerp retables, the present relief is exceptionally elaborate, showing an array of different textures and details. Compare to a Mary Magdalene with similar headdress in the Brussels' Royal Museums for Art and History (inv. no. V 327, op. cit. no 89), and a group of similarly elaborately dressed spectators at the Crucifixion in the same museum (inv. no. 8653).
