This beautiful chalice compares with metalwork made in Siena in the 14th century. With the central knop with enamelled Apostles it follows a form which relates to more elaborate chalices such as the important example from the first half of the 14th century in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. 237-1874). Note also the Sienese chalice in the British Museum (inv. no. 1913,1220.96). The present example differs in not having a foot in the form of a cusped hexafoil (as is often seen) instead having a simpler rounded design.
