Galerie Georges Giroux, Brussels, 14-15 March 1958, no. 545 (pl. 20);

Gustaaf Vanderhaegen, Ghent, acquired at the above;

thence by descent to the present owner

This group of the Virgin and Child on a crescent moon betrays the influence of the Franconian master sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider. The dynamic pose of the Christ Child, who appears to engage with an unseen interlocutor at the Virgin's proper left side, finds a parallel in a Virgin and Child attributed to Riemenschneider in the Church of St Martin in Euskirchen (Bildindex Foto Marburg, no. fmd10014590).
