Possibly Hugh Clifford, 6th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh (1759-1831), Ugbrooke Park, Chudleigh, Devon;

by family descent at Ugbrooke Park, Chudleigh, Devon;

the present owner

This fine marble bust is close to Pietro Tenerani's portrait of Pope Gregory XVI carved in 1839 and now in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (inv. no. H.CK-821). It is possible that the present bust may have been executed in the same workshop. It is also interesting to note that the Flemish sculptor Joseph Tuerlinckx (1809-1873) was also responsible for a portrait of Gregory XVI whilst he was living in Rome between 1840 and 1844 and so is also a candidate for sculptor of the present bust.
