AN OTTOMAN LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ PEN BOX (QUBUR) WITH METAL INK-WELL, TURKEY, 18TH CENTURY


of cylindrical form with fitted lid, painted in polychrome and gold, a brass ink-pot fitted within the base

This delicate pen box recalls in shape contemporaneous document holders produced in the Ottoman empire between the eighteenth and nineteenth century (see Sotheby’s London, 25 October 2017, lot 204 and 8 October 2014, lot 174). A similar pen case, dated 1120 AH/1708 AD sold in these rooms, 24 April 2012, lot 111. Another similar example, dated 1185 AH/1771-72 AD with fitted ink-well is now in the Sadberk Hanim Museum, inv.no. SHM 11992-Z.405 (Z. Tanindi, Harmony of Line and Colour, Istanbul, 2019, vol.II, p.769).
