Description

A LARGE ILLUMINATED QUR’AN, COPIED BY MUHAMMAD B. AL-SAYRAFI AL-MU’AZZIN, PROBABLY ANATOLIA, DATED 846 AH/1443 AD

Arabic manuscript on paper, 218 leaves, 15 lines to the page, written in naskh in brown ink, verses separated by gold, red and blue rosettes, surah heading in gold tawqi’ outlined in black with interstices filled in black or blue, lacking 4 leaves at the beginning and possibly some quires in the middle, in brown leather binding, with flap

33.6 by 24cm.

This Qur’an in particularly interesting as it is a hybrid of different styles and an example of manuscript production outside the main cultural centres of the fifteenth century. Although the naskh and surah headings recall contemporaneous Mamluk examples, the verse markers as well as the colophon point towards a more Anatolian or Persian attribution. The scribe used the Persian version of the number ‘four’ in the colophon, likely ruling out a Mamluk origin.
