Description

PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT EUROPEAN COLLECTION

AN UNUSUAL SAMSON IZNIK-STYLE POTTERY CANDLESTICK, FRANCE, 19TH CENTURY

of candlestick form, decorated in underglaze dark and lighter green with tiger-stripe and cintamani design

20.5cm.

Ex-private collection, France.

The Samson factory in France was particularly active producing copies of Iznik pottery in the late nineteenth century. Iznik candlesticks are rare and of a form originally inspired from metalwork. The present example stylises one of the most iconic designs of Iznik, the so-called tiger stripes which are usually paired with the cintamani dots (as on the drip pan of this example). A jug in the David Collection, Copenhagen, inv. no.1/1962, shows off how striking this design can appear.
