AN OTTOMAN SILVER REPOUSSÉ BOWL FEATURING ST. GEORGE AND THE DRAGON, GREECE, EARLY 17TH CENTURY


of rounded form, the omphalos embossed and incised with a depiction of St. George killing the dragon, the cavetto and fluted exterior with a series of repoussé motifs depicting alternating double-headed eagles and a crest, with remnants of the tughra of Sultan Ahmed I (r.1603-17)


11.7cm. diam. 

The centre of this bowl features a depiction of Saint George on his horse killing the dragon. A popular legend, versions of the episode are to be found from the twelfth century in Christian iconography in both the Eastern and Western traditions. The present example combines both Ottoman and Greek styles and techniques.
