Description
A SAMSON IZNIK-INSPIRED POTTERY EWER, FRANCE, 19TH CENTURY
pyriform body with sinuous spout and handle, hinged lid, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, turquoise, green, relief red, with black outlines, one side depicting a janissary within a drop-shaped medallion, other side with an architectural structure possibly a mosque, Samson mark to underside of foot

This carefully decorated ewer is not only inspired by the style of Iznik pottery, but also draws directly from sixteenth and seventeenth century design. A similar model was sold in these rooms, 1 April 2009, lot 218.
