A BUFFALO HORN BOW TAKEN AT THE 'INDIAN MUTINY', NORTH INDIA, MID-19TH-CENTURY


composed of two worked and polished buffalo horns with silver-mounted central grip

Ex-collection Oliver Hoare (1945-2018).

Formerly in the collection Colonel James Alexander Francis Humberston Stewart-Mackenzie, 1st Baron Seaforth (1847-1923), who served with the 9th Lancers in the Afghan War of 1878-1880, and later as military secretary to Sir Mountstuart Grant Duff, Governor of Madras. Stewart-Mackenzie retired to his ancestral seat of Brahan Castle in Ross and Cromarty and was raised to the peerage in 1921, dying without issue in 1923. Brahan Castle fell into disrepair and was demolished in the early 1950s when this piece was presented to the Leeds Archers.
