An Egyptian Encaustic on Wood Mummy Portrait of a Youth

circa late 1st Century A.D.

wearing a white tunic with red clavus and white mantle, his dark curly hair with a youthful ringlet beneath the right ear and surmounted by a foliate wreath.

31.4 by 15.2 cm.

Comparison with 1970 photograph shows that chips along upper edge and most splits across panel have been filled in and in painted over. Nose area is where overpainting is most obvious. Muddy area covering proper right side of neck and jaw in 1970 image (perhaps an early restoration) was retouched. Area directly below proper right ear now mostly obscured.
