GEORGIA O'KEEFFE
O'KEEFFE'S SET OF ARTIST'S PASTELS
A set of H. Schmincke & Co. Weiche Künstler-Pastell-Farben, Düsseldorf, ca. 1915–1920, comprising approximately 180 soft pastel crayons, each with wrap-around labels printed in roman and Gothic letters, housed in two three-row stacking trays within the original wooden box, large printed manufacturer's label affixed inside the lid; a very few pastels lacking, several others broken.
Georgia O'Keeffe's affinity for working with pastel was largely unknown until the publication of the O’Keeffe catalogue raisonné in 1999 and the traveling exhibition of the following year, "O’Keeffe on Paper." This set of fine German pastels likely dates to about the time of her first acquaintance with Alfred Stieglitz. The most used pastels in this set are the various shades of yellow, orange, and green. O'Keeffe was also known to make her own pastel crayons on occasion.
