Description

GEORGIA O'KEEFFE

HAND-SEWN BLACK VELVET "HELMET" HOOD

Black velvet hood with black silk lining, raised seams, large velvet button closure at neck, and short shoulder cape (possibly hand-sewn by Georgia O'Keeffe).

"[Georgia O'Keeffe] sometimes ... covered her head with a black hood or a hat, lending an ecclesiastical aura to her appearance; she might be a monk, a nun, a prophet, a penitent — or, more diabolically, a witch, an occultist, a sorceress." (Living Modern, p. 101)

LITERATURE:

Similar to the "Helmet" Hat illustrated in Wanda M. Corn, Georgia O'Keeffe: Living Modern, New York, 2017, p. 181
