"Writing in 1974 about her early development as an artist, O'Keeffe acknowledged, 'Along the way I probably looked very carefully at Chinese and Japanese paintings and calligraphy. …' Throughout her life she maintained that the best painting in the world, and her favorite, was Chinese. Her extensive collection of books and catalogues on Chinese art is evidence of her perennial fascination" (The Book Room: Georgia O'Keeffe's Library in Abiquiu, p. 23).
