Description

A Vienna (Du Paquier) porcelain snuff box with gold mounts, circa 1735-40

of circular baluster form, painted with hunting scenes, the box with a continuous frieze of equestrian figures in landscape and a house below mobbing birds, the slightly domed cover with falconers within black-line and gilt scroll cartouche, the interior of the cover with a rider and further figures within a circular cartouche below a purple-ground border, the interior of the box richly gilt, the underside with fruit, the mount with scroll thumbpiece

5.4cm., 2 1/8 in. diameter

Du Paquier snuff boxes are rare when compared to the output of Meissen and French contemporaries.  A box of similar form and attributed to Helchis, painted with stag hunting subjects was sold at Sotheby's London, 24 April 1961, lot 310.  Hunting subjects were popular at the factory, particularly in the last ten years of the Du Paquier period, as were European landscape subjects.
