'Thousand Island Lake and Banner Peak at Sunset'

gelatin silver print, initialed. dated, and copyrighted '(c) AEA 23' in ink on the image, framed, 1923; accompanied by the original mount, signed and inscribed 'To Mr. and Mrs. Duncan McDuffie with the Season's Best Wishes from Ansel E. Adams,' partially titled and dated in green ink, and a Michael and Jeanne Adams collection stamp on the reverse, and with a certificate of provenance, signed by Michael and Jeanne Adams (3)

image: 5 3/4 by 8 in. (14.6 by 20.3 cm.)

frame: 17 3/4 by 22 in. (45.1 by 55.9 cm.)

This early print is on matte-surface paper with a textured surface and a pleasing warm tonality, is in generally excellent condition. There is a great deal of detail, even in the darkest areas. Faint silvering is visible at the edges. There are tiny deposits of original retouching, primarily visible along the left edge.

On the reverse of the print are small black paper and adhesive remnants that correspond to remnants and abrasions on the mount. 'AA/1887' is written in pencil in an unidentified hand on the reverse.

The original mount is appropriately age-darkened and there is some scattered foxing and staining. The following is written in an unidentified hand in ink: 'Thousand Island Lake - Banner Peak - Sunset' and 'by Ansel Adams - 1923.' the mount has been trimmed, as the title, date, and a second signature are now only partially visible on the reverse. The following is written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse: 'B-1'; 'V408'; and 'MJA#0192b.'

When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.
