'Surf, Point Lobos State Reserve, California'

gelatin silver print, mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, the photographer's Carmel studio stamp, with title and date in ink, and a Michael and Jeanne Adams collection stamp, on the reverse, framed, 1963, printed circa 1976; accompanied by a certificate of provenance, signed by Michael and Jeanne Adams (2)

image: 9 3/8 by 13 3/8 in. (23.8 by 34 cm.)

frame: 18 3/4 by 22 3/4 in. (47.6 by 57.8 cm.)

This print is in generally excellent condition There are tiny deposits of original retouching visible in the lower center under very close examination. The upper edge of the mount is hinged to the mat.

There are some stray graphite marks on the reverse of the mount. The following are written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse: '#6013'; 'MJA #0228'; 'AA/1877'; and 'SOMJA.'

Although Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career, the Carmel studio stamp on the reverse of the present mount is not included. The stamp, similar to BMFA 11, but with the zip code '93923,' is dated with both the negative and printing dates (in this case, 1963 and circa 1976, respectively) in an unidentified hand in ink.
