'Sierra Nevada, Winter, from the Owens Valley, California'

gelatin silver print, mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, the photographer's Carmel studio stamp, with title and date in ink, on the reverse, framed, an Andrew Smith Gallery, Santa Fe, label on the reverse, circa 1944, printed in 1978

image: 15 by 19 1/4 in. (38.1 by 48.9 cm.)

frame: 28 1/2 by 34 1/2 in. (72.4 by 87.6 cm.)

This print is in generally excellent condition. There is a deposit of original retouching in the upper right. There are a few white accretions in the uppler left quadrant. The mount is darkened around the periphery of the print and there are some faint fox marks along the left and right sides.

There is faint foxing on the reverse. '11325' and 'AA/1596' are written in pencil in an unidentified hand on the reverse.

Although Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career, the Carmel studio stamp on the reverse of the present mount is not included. The stamp, similar to BMFA 11, but with the zip code '93923,' is dated with both the negative and printing dates (in this case, circa 1944 and 1978, respectively) in an unidentified hand in ink.
