Ansel Adams

1902 - 1984

Reflections, Lyell Fork of the Merced River

gelatin silver print, mounted to Crescent illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, the photographer's Carmel studio stamp (BMFA 8), with title and date 'ca. 1936' in ink, on the reverse, framed, circa 1943, probably printed between 1963 and 1970

image: 7 5/8 by 9 3/8 in. (19.4 by 23.8 cm.)

frame: 18 7/8 by 22 7/8 in. (47.9 by 58.1 cm.)

This print, with a semi-glossy surface and mounted to Crescent illustration board, is in generally excellent condition. In raking light, the following are visible: a few deposits of original retouching; and a small surface disruption, likely a result of mounting.

The mount is abraded at the periphery of the image and it is faintly soiled at the edges.

The reverse is scuffed. The following is written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse: '63 [circled]' and 'AA/1734.' The Carmel studio stamp is annotated '(W.G)' in pencil.

Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 8 on the reverse of the mount: 1963 through 1970.
