1902 - 1984
'Orchard, South of San Jose, California'
gelatin silver print, mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, the photographer's Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 7 and 8), titled in ink, on the reverse, framed, 1945, probably printed between 1963 and 1970
image: 14 by 19 1/2 in. (35.6 by 45 cm.)
frame: 31 1/2 by 35 1/2 in. (80 by 90.2 cm.)
This print, on paper with a slight surface sheen and subtle texture, is in generally excellent condition. There is a tiny deposit of original retouching in the upper left quadrant. The mount is stained and there are some remnants from old adhesive. '11' and '17' is written in pencil in an unidentified hand on the mount in the lower right corner.
The reverse is soiled. 'AA/2167' is written in pencil and '14' and 11' is written in red ink on the reverse.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 7 and 8 on the reverse of the mount: 1963 through 1970.
