Latch And Chain, Mineral King, California

gelatin silver print, mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, the photographer's Carmel studio stamp, with title, date and annotation 'Remounted 4/4/80' in ink, on the reverse, framed, 1927

image: 9 by 6 5/8 in. (22.9 by 16.8 cm.)

frame: 23 by 19 in. (58.4 by 48.3 cm.)

This print is in generally excellent condition. Under close examination are the following: faint silvering, some deposits of original retouching, including a linear area along the left edge, and a tiny impression near the center left edge.

'AA/1753' is written in pencil in an unidentified hand on the reverse.

Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. The authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 11 on the reverse of the mount is 1973 through 1977. This stamp was used when the print was re-mounted. When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.
