image: 10 1/8 by 15 1/4 in. (25.7 by 36.2 cm.)

Christie's New York, 14 February 2007, Sale 1867, Lot 180, Andrew Smith Gallery, Santa Fe, as agent
U. S. Camera 1941, Vol. II, pp. 80-1

Of this photograph, Adams wrote, 'We were driving through Arizona — not far from the Grand Canyon — on a typical Southwest autumn day, clear and cool, and with a vigorous wind blowing. The sharp-edged mountains, a familiar accent on Southwest horizons, were brilliant against an exceptionally clear sky in which a huge cloud described the curve of a rising thunder storm. It was impossible to do else but stop and set up the camera. . .' (U. S. Camera 1941, p. 116)

Another early print of this image, previously in the collection of David McAlpin, is now at the Princeton University Art Museum.
