According to Karen Haas and Rebecca Senf in Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection, in 1937 Georgia O'Keeffe invited Adams and David McAlpin, an investment banker and photographs collector, to come to visit her at Ghost Ranch, about sixty miles northwest of Santa Fe, in the Chama River Valley of New Mexico.  On September 27, the group set out with Orville Cox, the head wrangler at the ranch, as their guide.  They visited several sites including the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, and Canyon de Chelly, where Adams captured this image of O'Keeffe and Cox.
