'Church, Cañoncito, New Mexico' (Gate and Cross)

mural-sized gelatin silver print, flush-mounted, signed and titled in red ink on the reverse, framed, an Andrew Smith Gallery, Santa Fe, label on the reverse, 1961, probably printed circa 1965; accompanied by a certificate of provenance, signed by Michael and Jeanne Adams (2)

image: 30 3/4 by 39 1/8 in. (78.1 by 99.4 cm.)

frame: 45 1/2 by 53 1/2 in. (115.6 by 135.9 cm.)

This mural-sized photograph, mounted to sturdy board, is in generally excellent condition. There is a 1/8-inch emulsion-loss in the lower left quadrant very close to the edge. When examined closely in raking light, the following are visible: deposits of original retouching; occasional scratches, scuffs and creases; linear scuffs running parallel to the edges, likely rubbing from a window-mat; a small circular impression in the lower left quadrant near the edge; cracks in the emulsion in the upper right quadrant; and some swipe marks, possibly a result of the mounting process. None of these detract in any way from the overall fine appearance of this impressive print.

The edges are worn and chipped, as is typical with Adams' large murals.

On the reverse of the mount are abrasions, a few stains, and small evenly spaced holes at the periphery and along the edges of the thick board. The following are written in an unidentified hand in pencil: '[illegible] 20834 30 3/4 x 39 97-9 [illegible]'; '19884'; and '22.'
