'Autumn Storm Near Las Trampas, New Mexico'
gelatin silver print, mounted to Hi-Art illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, the photographer's Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 7 and 8), titled and with the date in ink, on the reverse, framed, 1958, probably printed between 1963 and 1970
image: 10 1/4 by 12 7/8 in. (26 by 32.7 cm.)
frame: 20 7/8 by 24 7/8 in. (53 by 63.2 cm.)
This print, with a semi-glossy surface and mounted to Hi-Art illustration board, is in generally excellent condition. There are deposits of original retouching in the sky, visible only under close examination. The original mat is affixed to the front of the mount and is faintly soiled.
'AA/1743' and '67 [circled]' are written in pencil in an unidentified hand on the reverse. The upper edge and lower corners are abraded, suggesting that this mount may have been affixed to a secondary mount.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 7 and 8 on the reverse of the mount: 1963 through 1970.
