Overall in very good condition. One of only two examples from the period known to have survived, this monumental luminaire is a testament to one of Ruhlmann’s most spectacular commissions for the Ile-de-France liner. The luminaire comprises three elements (a marble base, silvered base and monumental porcelain coupe) which can be easily disassembled.
The porcelain body presents with subtle and inherent variations in surface and tonality. The bottom of the coupe with a slightly more ecru color compared to the rest of the lighter porcelain body which is inherent to the making and enhances the dynamic quality of the work. The external sides of the porcelain body with two areas of very minimal and spotty black marks which are not visually distracting. The interior with equally minor areas with black and red marks to the surface which are not visible when the piece is installed. The inside of the coupe includes an electric installation allowing for the piece to be illuminated. When illuminated, the coupe emanates strong light directed towards the ceiling which enables the piece’s full dramatic effect.
The silvered bronze surfaces have recently been polished by a professional conservator and present with a much cleaner and brighter luminous surface when viewed in person when compared to the catalogue photography. (Please feel welcome to contact Sotheby’s Design Department for additional photographs of this lot.) The silvered surfaces with some very light scuffing throughout and extremely minimal discoloration to the edges, not visible unless closely inspected.
The marble base presents with variegated coloration and veining inherent to the piece. The marble with light surface scratches and minor edge abrasions. The bottom area of one corner has been recently restored and stabilized by a professional conservator (imperceptible to the naked eye). An exceptional piece and an outstanding example of the collaboration between Ruhlmann and Sèvres in remarkable condition. The luminaire has a spectacular presence and a very elegant silhouette. Sotheby's does not guarantee electrical components and suggests having all wiring inspected by a licensed electrician.
