Malton's celebrated 'picturesque views of Dublin' record the city at its zenith in the late 18th century - prosperous, elegant and fashionable. Malton trained under the renowned architect James Gandon and the prints show his skilled eye for architecture, detail and perspective. Malton embarked on the ambitious project in the 1780s, with the prints being produced through the 1790s. Not long after, the Act of Union in 1800 changed the fortunes of the city and Malton, who died in 1803, did not reap the financial benefits of his work. Today, the series stands as an important historical record of both the dramatic architectural and social changes that Dublin underwent in the 18th century.

The present lot is a rare offering of the complete set of 25, including the frontispiece and Dublin City Coat of Arms, designed by James Malton.
