Hilda van Stockum (1908-2006) was a Dutch-born children's writer and artist who grew up in the Netherlands and Ireland. The present work is a youthful portrayal of van Stockum, aged 21. Her literary career developed from the late 1930s, and in Ireland she was a well-regarded artist, nominated an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1983.
