Jules Jacques Théodore Dominique Labatut studied at the École des Beaux Arts under François Jouffroy and Antonin Mercié and he won the Prix de Rome in 1881. He exhibited frequently at the Salon and at the Exposition Universelle, and took home medals in 1889 and 1990. He often depicted mythological subjects, including Narcissus and, as is portrayed in this sculpture, the goddess Venus.
