When Cours d'eau aux abords d'un moulin was painted circa 1855-65, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot was enjoying critical and popular success. More than any other artist, Corot's painting, such as the present work, represents the bridge between the classical landscape of Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and early Impressionism. Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) described himself as a pupil of Corot in the Salon brochures as a measure of respect, and other Impressionists did the same.

This work may have been in the collection of Gustave Tempelaere, the proprietor of Galerie Tempelaere, which he opened on rue Lafitte in 1867, near to his brother-in-law, the dealer Hector Brame (1831-1899). He represented a number of artists, including Henri Fantin-Latour.
