VENUS

signed F. Andreini/ Firenze

marble

height 59¾ in.; 151.8 cm

Ferdinando Andreini was born in Settignano, just outside of Florence, and he studied under Ulisse Cambi (1807-1895) at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze. Andreini began exhibiting in salons throughout Florence and Turin in 1861, and he became known for sculptures depicting female mythological and allegorical subjects. Like the present marble, the majority of the sculptures he executed during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, depict elegant and voluptuous nude figures. With its pure white unblemished surface, delicate features, undulating curves, and flowing drapery, Venus is a prime example of Italian Romantic sculpture.
