Frederick Morgan's idyllic scenes of children are, for many, the definition of Victorian childhood joy. Trained by his artist father - who had been taught in Paris by Thomas Couture (1815-1879) - the younger Morgan exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time at the age of 16. Just two years later, the renowned London dealer Thomas Agnew & Sons' became his sole dealer. The demand for and popularity of Morgan's paintings was further cemented by the large number of print reproductions created and sold during his lifetime.

A larger version of this composition was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1895 (no. 792).
