Rosa Bonheur used sketches and studies, like the present work, to inform finished paintings. The present work is a particularly nuanced study of light as an approaching storm casts strong shadow against the trees. The technique suggests the influence of John Constable whom Bonheur greatly admired. While it is difficult to date Bonheur’s sketches, the color choices, compositional technique, and lively brushwork suggest it was painted in the 1850s.
