While Georges Michel never met significant, commercial success in his lifetime his work was deeply important to the generation of Barbizon artists that followed him. His work was influenced by Dutch seventeenth century masters (earning an income by copying them for sale) but his emotive, painterly approach to recording the open landscapes, particularly under stormy skies, surrounding Paris was his own.
