This exceptionally large and intricate cameo is by the French gem engraver Emile Emile Gaulard (1842-1924). Gaulard was one of the foremost gem engravers operating at the end of the 19th century. A pupil of Johan Georg Bissinger (1836-1912), Levasseur and C. Salvatelli, he was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle. Several other beautiful cameos by Gaulard are in public collections, including his cameo with the Naissance de Minerve in the musée d'Orsay, Paris (1896, in. no. OAO221). The present cameo is rare and arguably one of Gaulard's most significant works.
