This beautiful marble head which is perhaps a representation of a Greek princess such as Medea, is possibly the 'Study of a head, marble' exhibited by John Thomas at the Royal Academy in 1860. Thomas was a significant and prolific sculptor in Victorian Britain. He is best known for his architectural sculptures adorning the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament), made to the designs of Charles Barry. Later in life he gained a reputation for portrait busts and ideal works, such as the present marble.
