A PAIR OF MINTONS PÂTE-SUR-PÂTE PEACOCK-BLUE-GROUND VASES AND COVERS, 'BELL DU JOUR ET BELLE DU NUIT' CIRCA 1894


shape 2449, decorated by Marc Louis Solon, signed L Solon in white slip on the front or back respectively, each of slender shape a with spiral fluted neck and foot, the shoulder affixed with two gilt wreaths resting on lug handles and decorated in white slip with a maiden emblematic of Dawn or Dusk floating in mid-air wearing a diaphanous gown, the first holding a mirror radiating rays of light with birds taking flight, the second holding an oil lamp as moths draw near, the reverse with a corresponding bust of Aurora within a sunburst above two cockerels or Minerva within a starburst above an owl, crowned globe Mintons marks in gold, impressed MINTONS marks, letter S, X., indistinct date code, probably for 1903, gilded V. 4 pieces.

Although the vases match in the decoration and vase shape number there is a slight differences in the rims and shape of the covers. The figural decoration, gilding and ground color all match. The overall condition of the vases is good, there are some minor chips to extremities of wreath handles.
